The Château de la Chasse is located in the heart of the Montmorency forest, in the French department of Val-d'Oise, officially in the town of Saint-Prix. It is nowadays an architectural curiosity and bears the traces of multiple changes undergone during its history .
The Château de la Chasse has been listed as a historical monument since the August 19, 1933.
In the 9th century, Einhard, the historian of Charlemagne, mentions a castle in this region of the Montmorency forest under the name of Castellum Chassia (probably from the Gallic “cassanos” which means oak).
It seems that the current building was erected at the beginning of 13th century by the man who would later become the Constable Mathieu II de Montmorency called the Great, and originally called Chasse Mornay. Its characteristics are inspired by the castles of the royal entourage of this period, and the first concrete mention of the castle dates back to 1207 , suggesting that it was then finished.
Among the important figures who stayed at the scene of the Hunt included many kings Louis X le Hutin, Philip VI de Valois, Jean Le Bon, Charles V, Louis XI, François Ier, Henry II, Louis Bonaparte, the Queen Hortense, Tsar Alexander I of Russia, Emperor Francis II of Austria and the Duchess of Berry.
The castle also served as a garrison during the Hundred Years War . The Chantilly museum has several receipts dated 1418, given to soldiers for having kept the Château de la Chasse.
The grandson of Le Grand Condé decided to demolish the castle in 1728 ; the towers were only truncated at an angle and covered with tiles, which made its architectural charm later on.
At the beginning of 20th century, the castle is abandoned. It was purchased by the State in 1971, restored in 1979 and now belongs to the Office National des Forêts.
Nowadays, the castle is no longer open to visitors, but the ground floor has been fitted out to accommodate school groups or organize temporary exhibitions. Two educational trails are set up at the start of the castle, one on forest ecology, the other on silvicultural techniques.
This package also features an additional mod for the nearby Tour du Plumet. This tower was built in 1863 by Baron Joseph Louis Léopold Double, descendant of a noble family. It was used as a hunting meeting place for hunting and was restored in the early 2000s by France Telecom, following the installation of a relay antenna at its top.
The Château de la Chasse comes with its own POI/
