Airbus Helicopters presented its "Flightlab" device and began flight tests on board this Flightlab. This helicopter is a true in-flight laboratory dedicated to researching new technologies. Airbus Helicopters' Flightlab provides a testbed to rapidly test technologies that may later power Airbus' helicopter lineup.
Flight testing began last April when the device was used to measure noise levels from helicopters in urban environments and to study in particular how buildings can affect people's perception. The first results show that buildings play an important role in masking or amplifying sound levels and these studies will be decisive when it comes time for sound modeling and regulation, in particular for urban air mobility initiatives (UAM ). Trials continued in December to evaluate the Rotor Shock Alert System (RSAS) intended to alert crews of the imminent risk of collision with the rotors.
This year's tests will include an image sensing solution with cameras to enable low-altitude navigation, the viability of a dedicated health and usage monitoring system (HUMS) for light helicopters, and a engine backup system, which will provide emergency electrical power in the event of a turbine failure. Flightlab testing will continue in 2022 to evaluate a new ergonomic design of intuitive flight controls to further reduce pilot workload, which could apply to traditional helicopters as well as other designs. VTOL such as UAM.
