There are three seaplane bases shown on the sectional chart in the area of Lake Huron north of the Drummond Island Airport (KDRM). Two of these, LaPoint (MI4) and Ashman Island (1MI0), are in the current MSFS data base. However, only the water runways are implemented, without any associated infrastructure. The third, Yacht Haven (D22), is not in the current database. Interestingly, of all three only Yacht Haven is shown in the current Michigan Airport Directory.
This airport add-on implements Yacht Haven Seaplane Base as described in the Michigan Airport Directory. The three runways shown in the directory have been given specific runway designators so that they appear in the World Map as departure points. A dock is included for mooring float planes. Amphibious planes may taxi onto the beach. Floatplanes can also be beached here and returned to the water using pushback. There are three parking spaces implemented, two on the beach for amphibious planes, and one at the dock for floatplanes.
The seaplane and boat docks are a rough approximation of what can be seen in the aerial view of the area. The shore facilities are fictional. I added these for the enjoyment of amphibious plane flyers. A static Cessna 172 amphibian is located near the small beachfront storage buildings, and a static de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver is moored at the floatplane dock. In reality, amphibious planes can easily land at KDRM, which is just a mile south of the seaplane base.
NOTES
To install the airport, unzip and place the folder titled "mulberrywing-airport-d22-yacht-haven-seaplane-base" in your community folder. To see the float plane dock you will need to download the Seaplane Asset Library from flightsim.to and place it in your community folder. Many thanks to 30West for providing this great library!
Drummond, a beautiful island with many bays, inland lakes, and numerous small islands located just off shore, is an area long favored by boaters. I never flew there, but I did have the opportunity to visit via the car ferry. I was particularly fascinated by the shoreline on the northern edge of the island, which can be reached by driving several miles of sandy two-tracks. Here large fossil-bearing rock outcroppings extend down into the lake from the adjacent uplands, a rare alvar biome. You can see literally millions of fossil shells and corals in the rock, the remnants of an undersea Devonian ecosystem exposed by recent glacial action.
