History:
REAL Transportes Aéreos was a significant Brazilian airline with a remarkable history. Founded in November 1945 by Vicente Mammana Neto and Lineu Gomes as Redes Estaduais Aéreas Limitadas (REAL), the company began with the acquisition of aircraft from the United States government, including the Douglas DC-3.
REAL expanded its operations by inaugurating domestic routes, connecting Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo in 1946. Throughout the 1950s, the company underwent significant expansion, acquiring other airlines and expanding its fleet.
Internationalization for REAL commenced in 1951 with flights to Paraguay, further boosted by the acquisition of Aerovias in 1954, enabling flights to the United States. The company had the world's largest fleet of Douglas DC-3 in 1959, with 86 units.
In 1960, REAL changed its name to Real Aerovias Brasília and expanded its routes, reaching destinations like Tokyo. However, the following year, in 1961, the company was acquired by Varig, marking the end of an era in Brazilian aviation.
Throughout its history, REAL faced challenges, including airplane accidents. Nevertheless, the company left a significant legacy in the development of aviation in Brazil during the 1940s and 1950s.
